Senior Cat Care at DVAH

Senior Cat Wellness Care

Veterinary Team

When is a cat a senior citizen?  There is no answer to this question—cats age at different rates.    As a general rule, senior citizenship for cats usually starts at 11 years of age.  As your cat ages, their bodies become less able to cope with physical or environmental stresses and their immune systems become weaker.  They are more prone to developing diseases including arthritis, diabetes, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease or cancer.

This is why annual preventative care is even more important for senior cats to prevent, delay and detect the diseases that can plague older cats.  Annual, or bi-annual wellness exams, are strongly recommended to make sure that all of your cat’s health care needs are being met.

According to the American Animal Hospital Association (“AAHA”), the following warnings signs could indicate a problem that should be addressed by a veterinarian as soon as possible.

  • Sudden weight loss or weight gain
  • Significant decrease or increase in appetite
  • Failure to eat for more than two days
  • Noticeable decrease in vision
  • Increasing inactivity or time spent sleeping
  • Excessive panting
  • Hair loss, especially if accompanied by scratching in a localized area
  • Seizures or convulsing

At DVAH, we offer programs that are tailored specifically for the needs of senior cats including vaccines, dental exams and treatment, parasite evaluation and additional testing such as urinalysis and blood-chemistry panel. Our veterinarians can also suggest specially formulated food for your cat, whose changing nutritional needs will benefit from an adjusted diet.

Keeping your cat mentally and physically active is also helpful in slowing the deterioration of senses associated with the aging process. Please speak with our veterinarians to learn more about keeping your senior cat healthy.
